I started with drawing. Sketchbooks, walls, eventually skin. The first tattoo was on a friend who couldn't say no. It was okay. The second was better.
At some point strangers trusted me, and to this day I don't know exactly when that happened. That drives me more than the craft itself.
What's influencing me right now is a lot of old stuff. Botanical drawings, illustrations from the 19th century, things someone made because they really wanted to look closely, not because it was a commission. You can tell. I try to do that too.
In the studio I work slowly. Most people who come to me have had an idea for a while. I like asking what's behind it, not because I need it for the design, but because it makes the result better.
Sometimes you get exactly what someone had in mind. Sometimes something else. Both are fine, as long as it still holds up in twenty years.
